TOP 100 innovator 2017

Humintech honored as leading innovator 2017

Once again, Humintech GmbH belongs to this year’s leading innovators within Germany’s mid tier. The Grevenbroich-based company is being honored with the TOP 100 seal by Ranga Yogeshwar, Prof. Dr. Nikolaus Franke and compamedia. This year, the award is being bestowed for the 24th time. Humintech has already been part of this innovation elite in 2015 and 2016, making this year’s honor the third in a row. A mayor asset in the independent selection process was the company’s outward orientation.

Hardly any natural resource has such a bad reputation as brown coal. In times of climate change, the days of fossil fuels seem to be numbered. Yet, Humintech is aiming for another direction. “We’ve been approaching brown coal ideology-free. In doing so, we’ve uncovered the huge potential of that resource”, says Berthold Stern, R&D manager with Humintech. The idea: Humintech is obtaining humic substances from oxidized brown coal or lignite. These substances are being used in agriculture as soil conditioners, manures or animal feed. Industrial uses include, among others, the manufacture of filter materials, dyes and concretes containing humic substances.

“Our technology opens up new possibilities for fossil resources”, says executive Manager Aydogan Cengiz. His co-partner Müfit Tarhan adds: “We’re presenting an old natural resource in a new, proper light and thus creating new acceptance.” To master Germany’s proclaimed u- turn in brown coal utilization, the bioengineers at Humintech are banking on intensive cooperation with various research facilities. Together with German Forschungszentrum Jülich, they explore in-depth how humic acids can be used to curb nitrate pollution in ground water. Other cooperations arise from the company’s engagement in the “Innovationsregion Rheinisches Revier”, an initiative to support and shape healthy structural change in the Rhenish coal district.

Success shows that Humintech is on the right track. Within the past two years, the staff number has more than doubled. Today, 49 employees are driving the development forwards. Therefore, it’s no surprise that the SME is being honored with the TOP 100 seal for the third time already.

TOP 100: the competition

Since 1993, compamedia is awarding the TOP 100 seal for extraordinary innovational strength and outstanding innovational success to small and middle sized companies. Prof. Dr. Nikolaus Franke is managing the process scientifically since 2002. Franke is founder and manager of Vienna Economic University’s Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation and visiting researcher at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Looking back at 18 research awards and more than 200 publications, he belongs to the international elite of innovation scientists. TOP 100’s mentor is science journalist and TV host Ranga Yogeshwar. Project partners are the Fraunhofer Society for the Promotion of Applied Research and SME association BVMW. German manager magazin is supporting the comparison of companies. TOP 100 innovator 2016

As in the previous year, Humintech GmbH was once again decorated a TOP innovator amongst German SMEs, making it one of Germany’s most innovative medium-sized company of 2016.
Humintech is a TOP 100 laureate for the second time in succession. The Grevenbroich based biotech company is specialized in researching, developing and producing humic substances and humic acids for the agricultural sector.

Germany at it’s Best – NRW INVEST 2016

Humintech has been awarded the leading technology company for humic acid based products. The award is confered by Garrelt Duin, economy minister of Germany's federal state North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). Since 2011, the international location marketing campaign "Germany at it's best: North Rhine-Westphalia" honors global top performers in business, science, culture and sports based in NRW.

TOP 100 innovator 2015

The Grevenbroich-based company joins an exclusive group of prizewinners stretching back over more than 20 years as Top 100 mentor Ranga Yogeshwar awards it the Top 100 seal of approval. The award to Humintech is the outcome of a two-stage analytical procedure by a team of research scientists.

Natural humic acids form the basis of Humintech GmbH's success. The com-pany uses these in agriculture to improve the properties of soil, for example, or to stimulate plant growth, and the industrial and animal feed sectors also benefit from the company's innovative products. Humintech GmbH scored particularly highly in the Top 100 competition's Innovations Marketing cate-gory, as it is great at coming up with ideas for commercialising these complex products. "We place great emphasis on an intensive dialogue with potential users," commented Müfit Tarhan, Humintech's executive director. "We offer our international customers workshops, for example, as a means of exchang-ing ideas. It's all about being open and transparent." Humintech has a sales network covering 60 countries worldwide.

To ensure the continuing success of the company, its 24 employees are closely involved in the creative process, with each employee contributing an average of five suggestions for improvements, approximately 60 per cent of which are implemented. Flat hierarchies and short communication channels make it easier to decide whether an idea should be taken up or rejected, and bonuses offer employees an incentive to continue their active engagement.

"Generating good ideas and implementing them quickly is an important com-petitive factor for us," explained executive director Aydogan Cengiz. "This is why we invest a lot of time and money into managing innovation. In doing so, we are relying on the creativity and inventiveness of all of our employees. I should like to extend my heartfelt thanks to them for helping us win this Top 100 Award."

The Top 100 accolade is awarded on the basis of a two-stage analysis de-veloped by Nikolaus Franke, Professor of Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration, and his team. The research scientists use more than 100 parameters in five separate categories to investigate how SMEs manage and generate successful inno-vations. The decision as to which companies ultimately receive the Top 100 award lies exclusively with the academic coordinators of the project.

This year, Professor Franke and his team reviewed more applicants than ever before, with 234 out of a total of 302 qualifying companies making it into the final. After the finalists had been split into three size categories (maxi-mum of 100 companies in each size category), 178 were awarded the acco-lade. The German SME summit in Essen provided the setting for the awards ceremony.

The Top 100 are outstanding in every respect: this year's crop includes 71 domestic market leaders and as many as 31 global market leaders. In the last three years, the top innovators have together applied for a total of 3,405 German and international patents. Nearly 41 per cent of their recent reve-nues came from new products and innovations, which they brought to the market before their competitors (average of all SMEs in Germany: 6.6 per cent). This success is no accident: the top innovators invest an average of 10.5 per cent of revenues in research and development (average of all SMEs in Germany: 1.5 per cent). Two thirds of the Top 100 are family businesses.
