Humintech GmbH is a German biotech enterprise based in Grevenbroich, North-Rhine-Westphalia. For more than 45 years, the company has been developing products based on humic acid and other humic substances. The product range comprises soil conditioners, plant fortifiers and animal feed supplements as well as core products for application in environmental technology or in the industrial sector. With customers in more than 70 countries, the company is counted among the global leaders of the industry today. Humintech uses an oxidized form of brown coal as a source for their humic substances, also known as Leonardite. While brown coal is predominantly used as an energy carrier today, Humintech focuses on the material, carbon-neutral use of the resource. The results are sustainable, eco-friendly and efficient products made in Germany.
Humintech´s innovative strength is award-winning: The company was valued as a hidden champion, ranked among the top 100 innovators of German small and medium sized businesses for three consecutive years, and is deemed as the leading technology company for humic acid based products. The company’s success reflects public interest for new resource-conserving economic ideas that benefit both people and the environment.
There is a long tradition of scientific research into humic substances in Germany, starting with the works of chemist Franz Carl Achard (1753–1821). Brown coal has been commercially deployed in Germany since the 16th century: The old dye Kasslerbraun is based on humic-acid rich brown coal which was mined in the Cologne coalfields among others.
Humintech is closely linked to this long-standing tradition. The story of the enterprise begins in the early 1970s with WESKO GmbH & Co. KG, a former subsidiary of Rheinbraun AG. Together with the institute for plant production at the University of Bonn, the company searched for an eco-friendly and sustainable approach to renaturate the post-brown-coal-mining landscapes of the Rhenish coalfields. The result of these efforts was Perlhumus, a soil conditioner based on highly oxidized soft brown coal.
WESKO changed owners in 1999: The entrepreneurs Dipl.-Chem.-Ing. Müfit Tarhan and Dipl.-Soz.päd. Aydogan Cengiz took over the company. Shortly afterwards they began developing further humic acid based soil conditioners in addition to their core product Perlhumus.
WESKO was rebranded to Humintech GmbH in 2001. Furthermore, the company opened many new fields of application for humic acid based manufacture and developed products for the use in agriculture, livestock breeding, the industrial sector and environmental technology.
In 2013 Humintech moved their headquarters from Düsseldorf to Grevenbroich, North Rhine-Westphalia. Their innovation and manufacturing facilities are located close to the commodities, right next to the Garzweiler II brown coal mine.
The official opening of the new manufacturing plant took place in September 2015.
Humintech is exploring the characteristics and effects of humic substances in their proprietary laboratory, always on the lookout for new insights and valuable applications. Additionally, the company works with research partners such as Fraunhofer Institute or Jülich Research Center and has insight into field studies of customers from all over the world. Employing their profound knowledge of the matter, Humintech acts as a bridge between science and practical use of humic substances.
Today Humintech is offering a broad range of high-value products for application in agriculture, livestock breeding, environmental technology and the industrial sector.
Humintech manufactures soil conditioners, biostimulants and organic fertilizers in different varieties. Apart from the core product Perlhumus, that also includes water-soluble salts from humic acids such as Powhumus and Liqhumus. Humic substances enhance soil quality and fertility and optimize the exchange between soil and plant. Their application reduces the need for artificial fertilizers and lets important nutrients remain in the root area of the plant. Humintech’s products are being applied in horticulture and in greenhouses, in hydroponics, on turfs and meadows, in field cultivation and orcharding, cultivation of ornamental plants and flowers, viticulture and seed care.
Humic acids are a reliable animal feed additive.. Their admixture effects a higher live weight of animals, improved growth rates, increased feed intake, an improved feed conversion rate as well as higher resistance to diseases. Humic acid based produce like HuminFeed strengthen the animals’ immune system reducing intestinal disorders and diarrhea, especially among young animals. All of this makes them an important means not only for livestock breeding, but also for veterinary medicine and aquaculture.
Humic acids have a positive impact on the physical and biological properties of soils and are therefore excellently suited for the rehabilitation of problem soils. They are applied to control erosion and counteract soil salinization. Furthermore, they enhance liquid manure treatment: The concentrated humic acids in products like Humodor absorb harmful gases and odors and help create a high-quality fertilizer for the agriculture.
Potassium and sodium humates like Humin-P 775 and Humin-S 118 improve concrete, cement and drilling fluids, they color paper, clear water of toxic metals, they are components of ceramics and much more. Ever new practical applications emanate from the systematic research of humic substances – a process Humintech will continue to actively shape in the future.
Sustainability has many faces. Not only does it include an active contribution to environmental protection, but also the liability to return something to society. As a training company Humintech enables young people to a solid career start in an internationally operating company. Since entrepreneurial responsibility doesn´t end at the company fence, Humintech supports organizations and initiatives that advocate for people and environment and promotes art and cultural events.
